Aeneas and Dido: Love, Lust, and Loss Virgil’s The Aeneid Book IV, begins with a conversation between Dido, the queen of Carthage, and her sister Anna. Topic Dido is torn between her love for Sychaeus, her beloved, deceased husband, and this Trojan warrior, Aeneas.
He was a member of the royal line at Troy and cousin of Hector. He played a prominent part in defending his city against the Greeks during the Trojan War, being second only to Hector in ability. Interestingly, Aeneas recognizes and addresses his own passivity in Book Four. Aeneas pities poor Dido as he sees how gravely his departure affects her. In an effort to ease his parting, Aeneas admits his passive response to the gods, saying, “I do not take course for Italy of my own free will” (line 361). Dido and Aeneas is an opera that moves me every time I hear or see it. I loved this film, which incorporates dance as well as music and singing.
